EP48

So, I guess you could say that the internet is a hobby of mine. As part of my (yet ongoing) post-apocalyptic phase I wound up reading a strange story (not for the weak of heart) about a little know address called 192.168.100.1. This is probably the configuration/information page of your cable modem if you have one.
Yes I know that you’ve never heard of it.
Come to think of it, did you really think you knew how the internet worked at all?

So, as you peruse this hidden page you may learn a bit more but it stays pretty scarce on the details. Who knows, maybe the new bible really is in there. Anyway, everyones cable modems lead to this big thing called a CMTS inside the headend of the cable-cartel’s buildings. Imagine the CMTS like a big router that uses coaxial cable instead of ‘ether and handles coaxial-ether (or copper/fiber for that matter) conversion.
No fair, I want one.
Yes, I’m sure you would if you were me. In case you don’t know I’ve been fantasizing about a homebrew communications network that I could set up. I don’t want to use ‘ether for long range communication ’cause no one else is (and for a reason too). ‘Ether has a fairly limited range compared to coaxial, so for long range it’s either that or wireless (which is another story all together). So far I’ve only been able to find CMTS’s being sold on ebay for upwards of $15000.
That’s why I’m founding this new category, Project Almon. Find an alternative to the expensive CMTS’s to preserve long range wired networking for The Fall. Learn as much as we can before the n’Am’Net crashes and keep the wheels of society moving because, in a few years, all hell ‘ill brake loose if the lines go down.
